¿Qué me podéis explicar sobre este vuestro primer trabajo llamado “This Is The Sound” y porque este título?
Anna: En menos de un año no sólo empezamos una nueva banda, sino que también escribimos una hora entera de música. Nuestro sonido se desarrolló muy natural... básicamente empezamos a componer, seguimos nuestros impulsos y este es el resultado. "This Is The Sound" es una declaración, especialmente para nosotros. Estamos orgullosos y emocionados de lo que hemos logrado y estamos comunicando sólo eso con este título.
What can you explain to me about this first work called "This Is the Sound" and why this title?
Anna: In less than one year we did not only start a new band, but also wrote an entire hour of music. Our sound developed very naturally… we basically just started composing, followed our impulses and this is the result. “This Is The Sound” is a statement, especially to ourselves. We are proud and excited of what we have achieved and we are communicating just that with this title.
He estado viendo el video-clip de “Avalanche”, grabado en mi país, concretamente en Tenerife ¿Cómo se os ocurrió ir a esta preciosa isla a grabar el video y porque?
Anna: Ir allí fue en realidad la idea de mi padrastro. Estábamos buscando un paisaje lunar como para capturar un final del escenario mundial. Islandia (el desierto negro) también estaba en nuestra lista, pero eventualmente Tenerife me sentí como la opción correcta. La ubicación fue elegida para "Black Moon", porque encaja perfectamente con la historia de la canción. La razón por la que también filmamos "Avalanche" allí fue para tener un ajuste intencionalmente contradictorio que creo que lo hace interesante. La grabación del video en las montañas no habría sido un problema para nosotros, pero queríamos contar la historia de una manera abstracta. La gente puede mirarla como una clase de proyecto del arte.
Merlin: Bueno, qué puedo añadir a eso, excepto que es realmente una hermosa isla, en un hermoso país!
I've been watching the video clip of "Avalanche", recorded in my country, specifically in Tenerife. How did you think to go to this beautiful island to record the video and why there?
Anna: Going there was actually my stepdad’s idea. We were looking for a “dead”, moon-like landscape to capture an end of the world scenario. Iceland (the black desert) was also on our list, but eventually Tenerife felt like the right option. The location was chosen for “Black Moon” though because it perfectly fits the storyline of the song. The reason we also filmed “Avalanche” there was to have an intentionally contradictory setting which I think makes it interesting. Filming the video in the mountains would have been no problem for us, but we wanted to tell the story in an abstract way. You can look at it as a kind of art project.
Merlin: Well, what can I add to that - except that it is indeed a beautiful Island, in a beautiful country!
He escuchado dos adelantos del nuevo disco, Avalanche y Black Moon, totalmente distintas entre sí, una más folk y la otra con una base algo más Heavy ¿Con cuál os quedaríais de los dos temas, si tuvieseis que elegir uno de ellos?
Anna: Ambas canciones combinadas son lo que nos hace Cellar Darling, así que no tendría sentido elegir una :-) Pero si estás preguntando qué canción me gusta más, entonces Black Moon.
Merlin: Y para mí es actualmente Avalanche - pero eso cambia todo el tiempo, y esa es la clave. De hecho, creo que hay algunas canciones más en el álbum que suenan muy diferente todavía - ¡qué es lo que personalmente más me gusta de este disco!
I heard two new releases of the new album, “Avalanche” and “Black Moon”, totally different from each other, one more folk and the other with a somewhat more heavy. Which you would choose , if you have to choose one of them?
Anna: Both of the songs combined is what makes us Cellar Darling, so it wouldn’t really make sense to choose one :-) But if you’re asking which song I like better then that’s currently Black Moon.
Merlin: And for me it’s currently Avalanche - but that changes all the time, and that’s kind of the key, really. In fact, I think there are a few more songs on the album that sound very difference still - which is what I personally love most about this record!
Venís de una banda que en vuestro estilo es fácil de reconocer Eluvetie ¿Qué esperáis de los fans de vuestra ex banda, de cómo os acogerán?
Anna: A algunos les gustará a otros no.
Merlin: Hasta el momento, el apoyo que hemos recibido de los aficionados ha sido absolutamente increíble - desde el principio cuando empezamos, hasta el lanzamiento de nuestro primer single y ahora 'Black Moon' y ‘Avalanche’. Por supuesto, nos encantaría ver como muchos de nuestros "antiguos aficionados " si es posible embarcarse en este nuevo viaje con nosotros, pero al mismo tiempo tomamos una decisión muy consciente desde el principio para no dejar que esto influya en nuestra música. Queríamos hacer exactamente la música que queríamos, que vino de nuestros corazones, sin ninguna restricción. Así que no nos pusimos a sonar como Eluveitie, pero tampoco nos propusimos a no hacerlo. Personalmente, mientras tocamos un estilo diferente de música y tenemos diferentes conceptos líricos, creo que mucho del "espíritu" de Eluveitie es reconocible en la música de Cellar Darling - a lo largo de la última década, hemos puesto a muchos de nosotros mismos En nuestra banda anterior, y han ganado y aprendido mucho de ella, también.
You come from a band that in your style is easy to recognize Eluvetie, What do you expect from the fans of your ex band, how they will welcome you?
¿Q ué paso para que tres integrantes de la banda se fueran todos a la vez?
Merlin: En resumen, me pidieron que saliera de la banda - una decisión que se hizo sin consultarme y sin consultar ni a Anna ni a Ivo. Esto no nos dejó otra opción que seguir nuestro propio camino - una muestra de amistad y carácter por parte de mis amigos que no puedo apreciar más altamente. Los tres también emitimos declaraciones en ese momento, y eso es realmente todo lo que podemos decir al respecto.
What happened so that three members of the band left all at once?
Merlin: In short, I was asked to leave the band - a decision that was made without me and without consulting Anna and Ivo. This left us no choice but to go our own way - a show of friendship and character on the part of my friends that I could not appreciate more highly. The three of us also released statements at the time, and that’s really all we can say about it.
Algo que tenia vuestra antigua banda (aparte de la impresionante música) era la voz de su cantante Chrigel Glanzman, con esa voces guturales ¿En Cellar Darling tendremos en algún tema alguna voz gutural o solamente tendremos la espectacular voz de Anna Murphy?
Anna: Eso es algo que no conocemos a nosotros mismos. Seguimos nuestros impulsos, no tenemos un plan o una receta para nuestra música. Si se siente bien incorporarlos en algún momento, entonces lo haremos y si no lo hace, entonces no lo haremos. Cualquier cosa puede suceder, tal vez algún día Merlin aprenderá a tocar el saxofón y jugar algunos solos.
Merlin: Me encanta el saxofón.
Something that had your old band (aside from the impressive music) was the voice of its singer Chrigel Glanzman, with those guttural voices. In Cellar Darling we will have in some subject some guttural voices or we will only have the spectacular voice of Anna Murphy?
Anna: That is something we don’t know ourselves. We follow our impulses, we don’t have a master plan or a recipe for our music. If it feels right to incorporate them at some point then we’ll do that and if it doesn’t then we won’t. Anything can happen, maybe some day Merlin will learn to play the saxophone and play some solos.
Merlin: I do love the saxophone.
Con Eluvetie habéis tocado muchas veces por nuestro país tanto en conciertos como en festivales en España, ¿Qué te parece el público español?
Anna: Nos encanta ir a allí! Las multitudes son enérgicas y locas, como nos gustan! Y la comida es estupenda también. No podemos esperar para volver.
Merlin: España es siempre una experiencia increíble. No creo que haya habido una sola visita que no incluya un espectáculo fantástico y una fiesta después del espectáculo memorable - debe ser la energía de los españoles.
With Eluvetie you have played many times for our country both in concerts and festivals in Spain, what do you think the Spanish public?
Anna: We love it there! The crowds are energetic and crazy, just how we like them. And the food is great too. We can’t wait to return.
Merlin: Spain is always an incredible experience. I don’t think there’s been a single visit that didn’t include a fantastic show and a very memorable after-show party - it must be the energy of the the Spaniards.
¿Estará España cuando anuncien la gira de presentación del nuevo disco de Cellar Darling?
Anna: Hasta ahora no se ha confirmado nada, pero esperamos que así sea.
Merlin: ¡Estamos trabajando en ello!
Will Spain be when they announce the tour of presentation of the new album of Cellar Darling?
Anna: So far nothing is confirmed yet, but we sure hope so.
Merlin: We’re working on it!
Me ha encantado la portada del disco ¿A quién se le ocurrió la idea y quién fue el autor?
Anna: Averigüé el concepto y la idea de la obra de arte y luego trabajamos con dos artistas diferentes para darnos cuenta. La obra de arte de la portada fue creada como una colaboración del fotógrafo Manuel Vargas Lépiz ( https://www.manvarle.com)) quien tomó la foto de la figura y el diseñador gráfico Christopher Ruf https://www.saroscollective.com,que es responsable de los símbolos, el diseño y también nuestro logo . La portada de una mano muestra 14 símbolos (uno por canción) y dos elementos que representan a nuestros dos singles "Black Moon" y "Avalanche". La figura de la cubierta que forma parte de la historia de Avalanche invita a nuestro mundo de la música y las historias.
I love the cover of the album. Who came up with the idea and who was the author?
Anna: I came up with the concept and idea of the artwork and we then worked with two different artists to realize it.
The cover artwork was created as a collaboration of photographer Manuel Vargas Lépiz (www.manvarle.com) who took the photo of the figure and graphic designer Christopher Ruf (www.saroscollective.com) who is responsible for symbols, layout and also our logo. The cover on one hand shows 14 symbols (one for each song) and two elements that represent our two singles “Black Moon” and “Avalanche”. The figure on the cover which is part of the Avalanche story invites you into our world of music and stories.
Sois de Suiza un país con grandes bandas de Hard-rock (Gotthard, Krokus, Fair Warning, Crystal Ball...) ¿Cómo es recibido vuestro estilo de música en vuestro país?
Anna: No es tan fácil como una banda Heavy en Suiza. Incluso si ya tienes mucho éxito y giras a menudo se ignora. Pero ya estamos acostumbrados a ese fenómeno de tocar en Eluveitie. Eventualmente se enganchan ;-)
Merlin: Hay un extraño fenómeno con bandas suizas de rock y metal, lo acabo de comentar con algunos colegas: primero hay que ir al extranjero y una vez que el resto del mundo lo apruebe, puedes ganar algo de fuerza en Suiza. Eso va principalmente para la respuesta de los medios y la capacidad de tocar en más festivales y espectáculos - los fans son tan increíbles y leales como en cualquier parte del mundo, por lo que sin duda, ¡tenemos suerte en ese sentido!
You are from Switzerland a country with great Hard-rock bands (Gotthard, Krokus, Fair Warning, Crystal Ball ..) How is your style of music received in your country?
Anna: It’s not that easy as a heavy band in Switzerland. Even if you’re already very successful and touring you often get ignored. But we’re already used to that phenomenon from playing in Eluveitie. Eventually they catch on ;-)
Merlin: There’s this weird phenomenon with Swiss rock and metal bands, I just recently discussed it with some colleagues: you first have to go abroad, and once the rest of the world approves you might gain some traction in Switzerland. That goes mostly for media response and the ability to play more festivals and shows - the fans themselves are as incredible and loyal as anywhere in the world, so we’re certainly lucky in that regard!
¿Cómo está la escena del Hard y el Heavy Metal en general en vuestro país?
Anna: Es una escena muy dedicada y es bastante grande con respecto al hecho de que somos un país tan pequeño.
How is the Hard and Heavy Metal scene in general in your country?
Anna: It’s a very dedicated scene and it’s fairly big regarding the fact that we’re such a small country.
